Harkstead Church Heritage is a registered charity whose purpose is to maintain the fabric of St. Mary’s Church, Harkstead. The church is a Grade 2 listed place of worship; it is recorded in the Domesday Book 1086 and retains many features from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. A major programme of maintenance and restoration has been followed since the mid-1980s beginning with the maintenance and restoration of the peal of six bells, followed by re-introduction of lead as the roofing material for the south aisle, and in 2006 the repair of the tower and walls. These three phases have cost a total of £125,000 and have received grant aid from English Heritage. Harkstead Church Heritage conducts fundraising events throughout the year including supper parties, plant sales, open gardens and concerts. Details of the next events will be found in the ‘What’s On’ Section of this Website. St. Mary’s is open every day of the year from about 9.00 am. Visitors are always welcome.
